Living lab in Norway-Sweden

CONTEXT

Norway and Sweden are characterized by boreal and hemiboreal forest, as well as alpine forest towards the north and in the mountain regions. 

The boreal and hemiboreal regions typically experience small fires, yet severe wildfire events have occured, for example the fire in Västmanland  in 2014 and several large forest fires in Sweden in the dry summer of 2018. 

Historically, fires have occured in the summer season, but changes in the local climate conditions can result fire events even during the winter, such as the fire in Lærdal in January 2014.     

FIRE MANAGEMENT IN NORWAY- SWEDEN

Fire management in Norway and Sweden is fronted by the local Fire and Rescue Services, with a general policy of preventing all fires and minimizing damage to forests, people and infrastructure.

Prescribed burnings are used only on a very limited scale; the attitude of the general public is to avoid all fires. Active forest management actions towards resilient landscapes are currently limited.  

CHALLENGES

  • Further change in fire regime due to climate changes may impact the region 
  • Adapt knowledge and lessons learned from southern Europe to the current and future conditions in the Nordic countries

  • IA 1.2 Testing key inputs for atmospheric data analysis using new knowledge and expertise on EWE 
  • IA 2.1 Improving data acquisition for landscape design based on novel remote sensing methods 
  • IA 5.3 Advanced vegetation characterization based on Earth Observation data fusion and Artificial Intelligence over forestland ecosystems 
  • IA 5.4 Piloting models for fire combustion and Pyrocumulonimbus with use of HR data 
  • IA 5.5 Testing of vertical atmospheric structure models based on satellite constellation in EWE 
  • IA 5.10 Development of a Pan-European system to define management priorities to mitigate fire impact
