What value is proposed?

  • Studying extreme fire behaviour by precise fuel and combustion modelling.
  • Modelling fire phenomena from micro scale to local scale.
  • Looking at how combustion is modelled in the existing regional forest fire models: What is missing or what assumptions limit the fire so that they do not predict extreme fires?
  • Looking at the combustion of different forest materials, and how it is affected by humidity, initial temperature, wind speed, and fuel composition and amount, and how much worse it can get if there is a downward flow condition. How much worse the momentary thermal stress on e.g., buildings comes in an extreme fire situation and whether there is any possibility to be protected from it.
