A Vision for Innovation in Wildfire Management

Hosted by CoLAB ForestWISE, in collaboration with Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) and Associação Florestal do Vale de Sousa (AFVS), the FIRE-RES Innovation Day Series is designed as an intensive networking and knowledge-sharing moment that fosters the development and implementation of cutting-edge solutions for wildfire resilience. As Carlos Fonseca, CTO of CoLAB ForestWISE, stated during the opening remarks, the event gathered key players from across Europe and the United States, for an exciting exchange of ideas and solutions. His words resonated throughout the event, highlighting CoLAB ForestWISE’s commitment to a comprehensive approach that integrates science and community resilience as pillars of wildfire management.

Over two days, the event featured keynote addresses, high-impact pitches from innovative solution providers and dynamic round-table discussions. Fonseca emphasized the importance of a collaborative platform, noting that “effective wildfire management requires a holistic approach, combining state-of-the-art technology with community resilience and environmental considerations.” This first event succeeded in building a collaborative ecosystem by bringing together entrepreneurs, researchers, NGOs, policymakers, and other stakeholders from across Europe and the United States.  The 70 participants included OIC winners, partners, and  members from the Community of Wildfire Innovation of the local Living Lab Portugal.

Inspiring Success Stories and Innovative Pitches

The first day was dedicated to sharing regional success stories from Vale de Sousa and presenting innovations that have already proven effective in wildfire management. Nine of the winning solution providers from the FIRE-RES Open Innovation Challenge (OIC) presented pitches, giving the audience a glimpse into how these innovations can address wildfire resilience at a practical level. Solutions ranged from new technologies for fire detection and prevention to socially-focused resilience strategies, reinforcing the importance of multi-disciplinary approaches. The enthusiasm and positive feedback from the OIC winners underscored the value of these innovations as they prepare to be implemented and tested in FIRE-RES Living Labs.

Engaging Discussions and the Round-Table Session

The round-table session stood out as one of the event’s most impactful moments. In these discussions, stakeholders addressed critical issues like financial resilience, innovative financing mechanisms, and strategies for sustainable implementation in Portugal. By focusing on real-world challenges and opportunities, the round-table session provided valuable insights into the next steps for a more fire-resilient Europe, particularly in terms of governance and long-term financial planning.

ForestWISE Workstation: A Hub for Innovative Solutions

Another major attraction was the CoLAB ForestWISE workstation, a hub where attendees explored the range of innovative solutions, products, and services developed for wildfire resilience. Participants were invited to engage with these offerings, which span technological, social, and ecological approaches.  The enthusiastic reception of the workstation further confirmed the significance of an integrated, multi-stakeholder approach in developing robust solutions.

Outcomes and the Path Forward

The Innovation Day in Penafiel was a remarkable success, achieving its goal of uniting a diverse group of stakeholders and paving the way for collaborative innovation. The positive feedback received from participants, including OIC winners and the local Community of Wildfire Innovation (CWI) members, attests to the event’s impact and the potential of the showcased solutions to make a real difference in wildfire management.

FIRE-RES partners are now looking forward to the next two Innovation Days, planned for Bulgaria and Spain in early 2025. These events will further expand the project ecosystem, continuing to foster partnerships, resource-sharing, and community empowerment, all vital to the shared mission of creating fire-resilient landscapes.
