FIRE-RES Seminar and public demonstration on Forest fire preventive silviculture

The FIRE-RES partner National Research Council of Italy is organising the “Preventive Silviculture and Forest Firefighting” seminar, a two-day in-depth study and field demonstrations in collaboration with the Tuscany Region at the AIB Training Center “La Pineta di Tocchi” in Monticiano (SI).

Seminar Program (25 October 2024)

The first day will be devoted to a highly relevant seminar with talks by national and international experts:

  • 8:30 – 9:00: Registration of participants.
  • 9:00 – 11:00: Opening session, with opening remarks by Lorenzo Nencioni of the Tuscany Region and several technical talks:
    • Forest fires and the risk to forest ecosystems – Luca Tonarelli (D.R.E.A.M. Italy).
    • Remote sensing for monitoring and analysis of forest fire effects – Giandomenico De Luca (CNR-IBE).
    • Mechanization for fire prevention – Martino Rogai (CNR-IBE).
    • Forest fires in Finland – Risto Lauhanen (SeAMK) and Harri Setälä (Rescue Service of South-Ostrobothnia).
    • The reality of forest fire communities – Lorenzo Nencioni (Tuscany Region).
  • 11:00 – 11:30: Coffee break

Field Demos (25-26 October 2024).

The second part of the event will feature the presentation and use of cutting-edge technologies for forest fire management and prevention.

  • 25 October, 11:30 – 13:00: Extension of a firebreak avenue using a lightweight, multipurpose professional harvester will be demonstrated. An opportunity to see innovative machines such as the Woody WH40 convertible log grapple processor and KDH Konrad’s interchangeable quick-attach shredder at work.
  • 26 October, 10:00 – 13:00: Hands-on demonstrations continue, with further work on widening the firebreak driveway, again using the professional harvester.
