"Integrated Living With Fire"

Following this motto, an international training took place in Walsrode (Germany) between 9 and 12 October 2023, under the joint coordination of FIRE-RES partners Wageningen University and the Waldbrandteam fire crew. The two institutions are coordinating one of the FIRE-RES Living Labs.

The meeting was an excellent opportunity to gather international representatives of different sectors, from civil protection to fire management, including public institutions and the forestry sector. Different actors came together united by a single goal: making the landscapes more resilient to forest fires in the context of climate change.

The intense exchange developed through talks, presentations, and field visits to circulate knowledge on integrated forest fire management, reinforcing networking and cooperation opportunities. A game was tested to explore the connection between fire danger and landscape.

The excursion included the set up of different simulated landscapes to reproduce and observe various fire behaviour patterns and test the techniques of controlled burning and tactical fire.

Among the topics addressed, are the perception of fire risk and its changes, information channels for the population, the use of fire for landscape conservation, fire ecology in a changing climate landscape and adaptive landscape management.
