SUMMARY:Toward a wildfire-resilient Europe: from knowledge to policy action
DESCRIPTION:Register now for the FIRE-RES Final Conference “Toward a wildfire-resilient Europe: from knowledge to policy action” \n📅 Date: 4-5 November 2025📍 Location: 4 November: The Hotel\, (Bd de Waterloo 38\, 1000\, Brussels)📍 Location: 5 November: Auditorium of the Breydel building (Av. d’Auderghem 45\, 1040 Brussels)🤝 Format: 100% in-person🔍 You can see a preliminary version of the agenda here and access the registration form here\nIn recent years\, Europe has experienced an increasing number of devastating Extreme Wildfire Events\, driven by climate change and land abandonment among others. Reactive emergency response approaches are no longer sufficient to manage the scale and complexity of fire risk. There is growing recognition that Europe needs to transition toward resilient landscapes to reduce the risk of extreme wildfires. \nOver the past four years\, the €21.5 million Green Dean H2020 FIRE-RES project has united research\, innovation\, and practical action to strengthen Europe’s resilience to extreme wildfires. The project developed a comprehensive ecosystem of solutions\, from high-tech innovations to community-based practices and governance strategies\, spanning all phases of wildfire management and addressing impacts at all levels: environmental\, social\, and institutional.  \nJoin us for this landmark event bringing together leading voices in wildfire resilience\, from civil protection agencies and scientists to community leaders\, policymakers\, and innovators. You can find a preliminary version of the agenda here. This conference is an opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of wildfire resilience policy and practice in Europe.  \nOver two days\, the event will present key findings and policy-relevant results from FIRE-RES\, facilitate dialogue between experts\, EU policymakers\, regional actors\, and civil society\, identify pathways to integrate wildfire resilience into EU policy frameworks\, funding instruments\, and strategic planning\, and support strategic engagement with Members of the European Parliament around legislative and budgetary priorities. \nThis is more than a conference: it’s a call to action. SUMMARY:Workshop "Shaping Future Fire-Resilient Landscapes and Communities in Portugal"
DESCRIPTION:CoLAB ForestWISE\, in collaboration with the Centre for Forestry Studies (CEF)\, is hosting the workshop “Shaping Future Fire-Resilient Landscapes and Communities in Portugal” on 23 May 2024 at 9:00 am. This initiative aims to discuss the innovations\, challenges and significant advances made during the 30 months of FIRE-RES project. \nThe workshop will feature various national experts and researchers from this European project\, who will present interesting topics such as the current challenges in managing rural fire resilience\, the management of fire-resistant landscapes\, success stories in fire resilience\, the adoption of innovation for resilient landscapes and strategic risk communication to empower communities. \nStructured into two panels and a round table discussion\, the workshop will also delve into the impact of projects funded by the European Union\, particularly regarding community involvement in pilot areas and Living Laboratories\, highlighting their benefits. To conclude the event there will be a session on empowering communities and territories\, giving voice to some of the FIRE-RES\, ResAlliance and RESIST project’ stakeholders with input from the audience. \nThe workshop “Shaping Future Fire-Resilient Landscapes and Communities in Portugal” is part of the programme of the XVIII International Seminars on the Overarching Issues of the European Area\, which will be held in Porto from 23 to 26 May 2024\, at the Faculdade de Letras of the University of Porto. This event is under the High Sponsorship of the President of the Portuguese Republic\, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa\, and of the European Parliament\, represented by President Roberta Metsola. \n  \nThe detailed program of the workshop “Shaping Future Fire-Resilient Landscapes and Communities in Portugal” is available here. \nThe participation is free but the registration is compulsory here. \n \n

SUMMARY:Towards a fire resilient Europe: can we do better ?
DESCRIPTION:Extreme wildfire events are becoming a major environmental\, economic and social threat across Europe\, increasingly affecting regions that were until now relatively spared. The summer of 2022 was a record year for forest fires\, and the recent winter drought has triggered a proliferation of forest fires across Europe in the summer of 2023. \nIn this context\, FIRE-RES is organising the policy event “Towards a fire resilient Europe: can we do better?” on 24 October 2023 from 14:30 to 18:00 at the European Parliament. The event is co-hosted by MEPs Ulrike Müller and Jordi Solé i Ferrando. \nThe event will focus on how the European Union can improve its resilience to forest fires and will give the floor to Members of the European Parliament and representatives of the European Commission. The discussions will be enriched by contributions from firefighters and researchers\, who will share their on-the-ground experience and their analysis of economic and policy tools for a more fire-resilient Europe. \nAgenda and presentations \nWelcome address | Ulrike Müller\, Member of the European Parliament \nPyrocene: the end of firefighting age | Martí Rosell Ibarz\, CFRS  \nFrom fire management to landscape resilience: how to connect the dots? | Antoni Trasobares\, CTFC. Presentation available here. \nEurope’s strategy to fight wildfires: tools and initiatives | Hanna Jahns\, European Commission – DG ECHO. Presentation available here. \nTowards a policy coherence for integrated wildfire risk management | Eduard Plana\, CTFC. Presentation available here. \nCan economic incentives help reducing wildfire risk? | Cecilia Fraccaroli\, EFI. Presentation available here. \nEU R&I delivering on sustainable forest management and resilience | Nicolas Faivre\, European Research Executive Agency. Presentation available here. \nPanel discussion: How to increase Europe’s fire resilience in a warming climate?
